Tafilah Waste Water Treatment Plant

DESCRIPTION

The project addresses current wastewater treatment process deficiencies to enhance sanitation in the Tafileh area. Under the Tafileh Wastewater Treatment Plant activity, USAID and the Government of Jordan demolished and replaced the existing wastewater treatment plant, built in 1989, and built a higher-capacity, more efficient plant on the existing site. This new plant has increased the waste processing capacity from 1,600m3/day to 5,000 m3/day expandable to 7,500 m3/day.

This project achieves the following:

  • Completed the design and the construction of a new plant with an average daily flow capacity of 5,000m3/day, expandable up to 7,500 m3/day.
  • The new plant provides over 67,000 people in Tafileh with access to safely managed sanitation services that prevent water contamination and protect public health and the environment.
  • Increased the volume of treated wastewater available for agricultural irrigation, allowing potable surface and groundwater sources to be used for drinking.
